Net Zero Ready, Energy Efficient, High Performance Home in Echo Haven Calgary
This high performance, sustainable home, was built in the neighborhood of Echo Haven Calgary located in the northwest community of Rocky Ridge. The home has two stories, with 2,186 square feet above grade and an over sizeddouble car garage. The home was designed with several parameters being considered. Energy efficiency, sustainability, functionality, style and of course budget were all taken into account when designing the home.
The building envelope is made up of a proprietary R50, double framed wall which is air tight. Virtually all thermal bridging is eliminated using this building envelope.
Using this and other high-performance construction techniques, this home achieved an unprecedented air exchange rate of 0.7 air changes per hour (ACH)! This is 6 times better than your typically built home. Triple pane windows were also utilized to limit heat loss through glazing.
The mechanical system is comprised of an air source heat pump which is up to 330% efficient, yes that’s correct, for every kWh of electricity put into heating or cooling the home, the heat pump supplies up to 3.3 kWh from the environment! This is accompanied by an HRV system which recovers heat from the air being exhausted from the home.
Other technologies are also being utilized such as drain water heat recovery.
All of these features resulted in a Net Zero Ready home with an EnerGuide score of 89, meaning this home uses only 1/3 of the resources as compared to a typically built home, that’s 66% less. With the addition of a photo-voltaic solar system, which is already roughed in, this home will use 0 external energy!
